Gérard, CEO of the factory "La voix du peuple", decides to close his factory by dismissing all his staff, starting with Jean Barbier, the chief of staff, and Phil Dechambre.

Jean Nerac completes his medical studies, sure of a successful career, but less sure of his attempts with fellow student Marianne, who refuses to accept him. Nerac leaves for the Auvergne. An old doctor will soon die, but replacing him will be difficult, as one of Jean's colleagues has failed. However, with patience, skill, modesty and friendship, Jean Nerac overcame the mistrust of his patients. He settled in these austere mountains, and Marianne, convinced of the young man's worth, helped him with her presence.

The nocturnal, panoramic view of the city of Beirut shifts between the stillness of photography and the movement of animated images, through a hypnotic process of superimposing images and layering exposure times. Carried along by this passage of time and this dilution of geographical identity, a voice reciting the eponymous text by Greek poet Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933) blends in with the rhythm of the images.
